ลักษณะการทำงาน

การ Chat ในแบบ Web Chat และ Web board นั้นมีการทำงานพื้นฐานแบบเดียวกันนั่นคือ เป็นการสนทนากันโดยผ่านเซิร์ฟเวอร์กลาง ไม่ได้ติดต่อกันเองระหว่างเครื่องคู่สนทนา กล่าวคือ เมื่อคุณพิมพ์ข้อความพูดคุยและส่งไป ข้อความนั้นจะถูกส่งไปเก็บยังเซิร์ฟเวอร์กลางและแสดงผลข้อความนั้นส่งกลับมาในภาพรวมทั้งหมด รวมถึงส่งต่อไปยังเครื่องอื่น ๆ ที่ออนไลน์อยู่กับเซิร์ฟเวอร์นั้นด้วย ทำให้ทุกคนสามารถมองเห็นข้อความต่าง ๆ ที่เก็บไว้บนเซิร์ฟเวอร์ ซึ่งก็เรียกได้ว่าการ Chat แบบนี้เป็นการทำงานแบบโต้ตอบกับเครื่องที่เป็นเซิร์ฟเวอร์ โดยใช้โปรแกรมบราวเซอร์เป็นตัวช่วยในการดึงและส่งข้อมูล
ความรวดเร็วในการโต้ตอบและแสดงผลก็จะขึ้นอยู่กับความเร็วในการติดต่อกันระหว่างเครื่องของผู้ใช้กับเซิร์ฟเวอร์ จำนวนผู้ที่เข้าติดต่อกับเซิร์ฟเวอร์กลางในขณะนั้น ๆ ก็มีผลต่อความเร็วในการโต้ตอบด้วยเช่นกัน
ส่วนการ Chat แบบใช้โปรแกรมโดยเฉพาะนั้น การทำงานจะแตกต่างกัน ขึ้นอยู่กับโปรแกรมที่ใช้ ซึ่งโปรแกรมเหล่านี้มักจะถูกสร้างขึ้นให้มีความสามารถในการคุยมากกว่าการคุยบนเว็บ เพื่อรองรับสำหรับผู้ที่ชอบการคุยเป็นชีวิตจิตใจ คุยกันเป็นล่ำเป็นสัน โปรแกรมที่ได้รับความนิยมก็มีมากมายขึ้นอยู่กับความพอใจของผู้ใช้โปรแกรม IRC ก็เป็นหนึ่งที่มีช่างเมาท์เป็นสาวกกันอยู่มากมาย โปรแกรมประเภทนี้ก็อย่างเช่น PIRCH , mIRC ซึ่งมีการทำงานคล้าย ๆ กับ Web Chat คือ เป็นการคุยกันผ่านเซิร์ฟเวอร์กลาง โดยบนเซิร์ฟเวอร์จะมีการแบ่งเป็นห้อง ๆ ให้เลือกเข้าไปคุยกันตามแต่ความสนใจ/ความถนัดส่วนบุคคล นอกจากโปรแกรม IRC แล้วก็ยังมีอีกโปรแกรมหนึ่งที่ได้รับความนิยมอย่างมากนั่นคือ โปรแกรม ICQ ซึ่งโปรแกรมนี้มีการทำงานที่แตกต่างออกไป คือเป็นการสนทนาที่มีทั้งติดต่อกันเองระหว่างเครื่องคู่สนทนา ซึ่งก็เป็นข้อดีอย่างหนึ่งที่ทำให้ ICQ เป็นโปรแกรมสนทนายอดฮิตในหมู่มวลช่างเมาท์ออนไลน์ แต่ยังคงพึ่งเซิร์ฟเวอร์กลางด้วยในการตรวจสอบสถานะ online – offline ของคู่สนทนา รวมทั้งการฝากข้อความข้อมูลต่าง ๆ ถึงกันในช่วง offline

ลักษณะการ Chat ในปัจจุบันมีลูกเล่น มีอะไรแปลกให้ตื่นเต้น เพิ่มสีสันกันมากมาย ทั้งนี้ก็เพื่อให้เกิดความแตกต่าง น่าสนใจ เรียกบรรดาช่างเมาท์ทั้งหลายให้เข้ามาคุย คุย แล้วก็คุยกันนั่นเอง เราสามารถสรุปรูปแบบการ Chat อย่างกว้าง ๆ ได้เป็น 3 รูปแบบด้วยกัน คือ
1. Web Chat หรือบางคนก็เรียก Chat room เป็นการเข้าไปคุยกันในเว็บที่จัดให้บริการ เป็นการคุยตอบโต้ระหว่างกันผ่านเซิร์ฟเวอร์ โดยใช้บราวเซอร์ปกติ เหมือนท่องอินเตอร์เน็ตทั่วไป รูปแบบ หน้าตา ความสามารถ และบรรยากาศของห้องคุยก็จะขึ้นอยู่กับผู้สร้างสรรค์เว็บบริการนั้น ๆ ว่าให้ความสนุกสนานแปลกใหม่ น่าสนใจมากน้อยอย่างไร
2. Web board หรือ Message board เป็นการฝากข้อความหรือคำถามไว้บนเซิร์ฟเวอร์ ซึ่งมักจะเป็นคำถามที่ต้องการข้อมูลที่ลึกกว่าการคุยโต้ตอบกันในทันที ตัวอย่างเช่น สอบถามเกี่ยวกับเทคนิคการเขียนโปรแกรม วิธีการแก้ปัญหาเกี่ยวกับคอมพิวเตอร์ วิเคราะห์/วิจารณ์ต่าง ๆ ทั้งนี้เพราะการสนทนาแบบนี้มีเวลาในการคิด-กลั่นกรองข้อความที่จะโต้ตอบ นอกจากนี้ยังเป็นเวทีระดมความรู้ ความคิดเห็น และแจ้งหรือประกาศสาระประโยชน์ต่าง ๆ ได้อีกด้วย เมื่อมีผู้เข้ามาพบมาอ่านและอยากใส่ข้อความโต้ตอบก็สามารถพิมพ์ลงไปได้ โดยจะมีการเก็บเอาไว้ภายใต้หัวข้อเดียวกันบนเซิร์ฟเวอร์ในระยะเวลาหนึ่ง
3. โปรแกรม Chat โดยเฉพาะ เป็นการสนทนากันโดยใช้โปรแกรมที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นมาเพื่ออำนวยความสะดวกในการคุยโดยเฉพาะ ซึ่งมีความสามารถในการคุยสูงกว่า 2 แบบที่ผ่านมา ตัวอย่างโปรแกรมก็เช่น PIRCH , mIRC, ICQ เป็นต้น

อินเตอร์เน็ต นอกจากจะให้เราได้ค้นหาข้อมูล ข้อเท็จจริง งานวิจัยต่าง ๆ ได้มากมายแล้ว ก็ยังหาเพื่อนสนิทชนิดไม่จำเป็นต้องเห็นหน้ากันเลยก็ได้ เพื่อประโยชน์ในการแลกเปลี่ยนข้อมูล ข่าวสาร ความคิดเห็นปรึกษาปัญหา หรือประโยชน์ใด ๆ ก็ตามแต่ และในปัจจุบันก็เป็นบริการที่มีผู้คนหันมาสนใจกันมากขึ้น ไม่ว่าจะอยู่ในวัยใด เรียกได้ว่า งานนี้ไม่มีช่องว่างระหว่างวัย
Chat ในภาษาอังกฤษ แปลว่า สนทนาอย่างเป็นกันเอง ช่างคุย สำหรับในอินเตอร์เน็ตก็เช่นกัน ต่างกันเพียงแค่เป็นการคุยโดยใช้วิธีพิมพ์ข้อความลงไปเท่านั้น ไม่ได้ใช้เสียง แต่ก็มีบางโปรแกรมที่สามารถคุยแล้วสามารถเห็นหน้ากัน หรือแม้แต่ได้ยินเสียง ซึ่งปัจจุบันก็ทำได้แล้ว อาทิเช่น โปรแกรม Net meeting , ICQ ซึ่งผู้ใช้ต้องมี กล้องดิจิตอล ถ้าหากต้องการเห็นหน้า และมีไมโครโฟน ถ้าหากต้องการคุยกัน แต่ทั้งนี้และทั้งนั้น คนที่เราต้องการคุยด้วยก็ต้องมีกล้องและมีไมโครโฟนด้วยเช่นกัน
ถ้าจะว่าไป การเข้ามา Chat บนอินเตอร์เน็ตก็คล้ายกับการเข้าไปในงานปาร์ตี้ที่ต้องมีการพบปะผู้คนมากหน้าหลายตา มีการแบ่งกลุ่มสนทนากันในหัวข้อตามที่ชอบที่สนใจ ที่ถนัด ซึ่งบนอินเตอร์เน็ตก็แบ่งเป็นห้อง ๆ สำหรับสนทนาในหัวข้อต่าง ๆ เหมือนกัน ซึ่งก็คือ Chat room นั่นเอง สิ่งที่ต่างกันก็คงจะเป็นในงานปาร์ตี้ผู้คนต่างพบหน้า สนทนาด้วยเสียง พูดคุยโต้ตอบกันไปมา เห็นลีลาท่าทาง แววตาว่าจริงใจขนาดไหน แต่บนอินเตอร์เน็ตจะใช้วิธีพิมพ์ข้อความลงไปแล้วส่งโต้ตอบกันไปมา โดยจะมีชื่อผู้พิมพ์และข้อความแสดงขึ้นในหน้าต่างสำหรับ Chat บนหน้าจอคอมพิวเตอร์ ไม่เห็นหน้าค่าตา ไม่เห็นบุคลิกที่แท้จริงของคู่สนทนา ยิ่งทำให้หลอกกันได้ง่ายมากขึ้นไปอีก จนเกิดเป็นคำถามยอดฮิตว่า คู่ Chat ของเรานั้นเชื่อได้ขนาดไหน ส่วนคำตอบก็คือ ไม่แน่ เพราะขนาดคนคุยด้วยยังไม่รู้แล้วใครจะรู้
การ Chat มีทั้งข้อดีและข้อเสีย ทั้งนี้ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับตัวบุคคลว่าเขาใช้งานมากน้อยอย่างไร หนักไปทางข้อดีหรือข้อเสีย ข้อดีที่ทุกคนคงไม่ปฏิเสธก็คือการได้รู้จักผู้คนมากขึ้น ได้แนวความคิดหลากหลาย มองโลกได้กว้างขึ้นโดยที่ไม่ได้ไปแสวงหาที่ไหนไกลให้เหนื่อยแรง ได้รับรู้ประสบการณ์ของผู้อื่นพร้อมกับเผยแพร่ประสบการณ์ของตัวเองที่เป็นประโยชน์ เผยแพร่และแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ ข้อมูล ข่าวสารต่าง ๆ ที่เป็นประโยชน์มากมาย และอื่น ๆ อีกมหาศาล ส่วนข้อเสียที่เห็นได้ชัด ก็คงจะเป็นอาการติดงอมแงม ไม่ไปไหน มัวแต่คุยเรื่องไร้สาระ ไม่ทำอะไร นอกจากคุย ๆ และก็คุยอยู่หน้าเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ จนคนรอบข้างอยากพังคอมพิวเตอร์ทิ้ง

Internet Relay Chat หรือ IRC คือ ระบบเครือข่าย (ผู้ใช้บริการ/ผู้ให้บริการ) อำนวยความสะดวกในการสื่อสารคุยกันระหว่างเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ด้วยกันในลักษณะ การส่งข้อความโต้ตอบกัน ผู้ใช้งานสามารถที่จะจัดตั้ง Channel , ห้องหรือกลุ่มของตัวเองในการที่จะคุยพร้อมๆ กันหลายๆ คน หรือต้องการคุยในลักษณะส่วนตัวก็สามารถที่จะทำได้ หลังจากที่ท่านเข้าสู่ระบบ Internet แล้ว ผู้ใช้งานที่มีความประสงค์ที่จะใช้งาน IRC จำเป็นที่จะต้องทำการ Join หรือติดต่อกับ Server ที่ให้บริการ IRC เสียก่อน เพื่อให้ Server IRC นั้นเป็นตัวกลางในการส่งข้อความจากท่านไปยังเพื่อนๆ ของท่าน ผ่านโปรแกรมใช้งาน IRC ในฝั่ง ผู้ใช้งานทั่วไป นั้นก็มีด้วยกันหลายโปรแกรม อาทิเช่น IRC II , PIRCH , MIRC , MsChat และอื่นๆ จากนั้นก็สามารถคุยกันได้อย่างสนุกสนาน

Chat ตามเวบไซต์ เราสามารถเข้าไปสนทนากันได้ที่เว็บไซต์ที่จัดให้บริการห้องสนทนา วิธีนี้ไม่ยุ่งยากอะไร ไม่ต้องเสียเงิน โดยเข้าไปในเวบไซต์ต่างๆ ที่มีห้องสนทนาให้ เช่น http://www.thaiirc.in.th/ วิธีการก็แค่ เลือกห้องสนทนาที่ต้องการ แล้วลงชื่อ จากนั้นก็จะสามารถเข้าไปสนทนาได้ทันที โดยเป็นการคุยตอบโต้ระหว่างกันผ่านเซิร์ฟเวอร์ โดยใช้บราวเซอร์ปกติ เหมือนท่องอินเทอร์เน็ตทั่วไป โดยนิยาม Text Chat คือ คุณจะต้องพิมพ์ข้อความที่จะคุยลงไปแล้วอีกฝ่ายก็จะตอบกลับมาเป็นข้อความเช่นกัน แต่วิธีการนี้มีข้อเสียคือ จะมีผู้อื่นอยู่ร่วมห้องสนทนากับเราด้วย และผู้อื่นก็สามารถที่จะอ่านได้และเราเองก็จะสามารถอ่านข้อความสนทนาของผู้อื่นได้เช่นกัน และถ้ามีคนอยู่ในห้องสนทนานั้นมากๆ ก็จะทำให้ช้า หรือไม่ก็ทำให้เราอ่านข้อความของคู่สนทนาของเราไม่ทัน

Camfrog is a video chat software program and community. It is owned by Camshare LLC. The latest version was released on 7 February 2008/ Version 4 (4.1.82). The primary use of a chat room is to share information via text with a group of other users. New technology has enabled the use of file sharing and webcams to be included in some programs and almost all Internet chat or messaging services allow users to display or send to each other photos of themselves.
Some people who visit chat rooms use them as a place to experience online sex, also known as cybersex or computer love. While not physically able to see their partner, cyber-ers apparently get stimulation by reading x-rated quotes. While many in the media focus on this aspect of chat rooms as it certainly boosts their ratings, it is by no means the only thing chat rooms are used for. It is important that the partakers in such activities do not reveal personal information such as addresses as sexual predators may use cybersex as a tool to stalk chatroom users.
Games are also often played in chat rooms. Historic examples are initgame, Hunt the Wumpus on IRC or an AOL chatroom game in AOL chat rooms.

Online chat is a way of communicating by sending text messages to people in the same chat-room in real-time. Some chat rooms such as Yahoo! use both text and voice simultaneously. The oldest form of true chat rooms are the text-based variety. Freelancin'_Roundtable was a modem-based text chat system in the 1980s. The most popular of this kind is Internet Relay Chat (IRC). However, there are also talkers and havens. The popularity of these kinds of chat rooms has waned over the years, and IRC's popularity has rapidly given way to instant messaging. Also a notable number of people were introduced to chat rooms from AOL and web chat sites.
There are also graphical user interface (GUI) text-based chat rooms which allow users to select an identifying icon and modify the look of their chat environment.
